"...It is time that you square certain indebtedness
you have incurred in the course of your life. Not that you will ever
pay in full, mind you, but you must make a gesture…This task
is guided by the purest sentiment, the sentiment of a warrior-traveler
who is about to dive into the infinity of the present moment, and
as he does so, he says thank you."
don Juan Matus
Before Tensegrity practice one afternoon, two practitioners were
having a tense exchange.
Linda was saying, "Hey, Raul, weren't you going to pay me back
at the end of last month? I haven't heard from you…"
Raul stiffened, and said, "Hey, look, you know I'm good for it,
it's a big amount, just give me some time! ¿Qué
te cuesta? What's the big deal?"
At that moment, Carlos Castaneda entered the studio and guided everyone
to get in pairs and practice a form of magical passes which began
with a twirl of the ankles, soon followed by a circling of the wrists.
"The way we handle our energy in these movements reflects the
way we handle energy in our lives," Carlos Castaneda said. "If
we are stiff, not able to turn, then it is likely that our energy
is stuck as well."
He said that we needed to recognize the value, the worthiness of our
energy, to manage it wisely, and to nurture its flow.
"This includes," he said, pausing for a moment, "being
aware of how we value and handle money..."
Raul felt his throat and fists tighten; Linda puffed up with pride.
Turning his wrist, Carlos Castaneda went on, "Isn't it interesting
that the word 'worth' was originally a verb linked to the Latin word
for 'turn'. Functional systems are turning, moving, circulating, able
to maintain a flow as with sap in trees, blood in the veins, air in
the lungs, soil being turned upon the earth."
"This is the nature of energy as it flows it the universe....As
physicists say, 'Energy is neither created nor destroyed;' it transmutes;
it changes hands; it transforms. Don Juan told me that money is a
form of energy, an exchange between forms, a pragmatic expression
of a universal current."
Then Carlos Castaneda guided everyone to do another movement, in which
one partner twirled the other, and then was twirled in turn. Raul
and Linda struggled with the move.
"To be aware of how you use your energy--and
your resources--and to keep them current, vital, adaptable, flowing,
is to be a leader," Carlos Castaneda continued. "An adolescent's
view of a leader is a person who tells others what to do--rather,
a leader is willing to make and see the total 360 degree turn, to
play all the parts, to take a thorough look at what he has given and
received, to make a joyful and mutually beneficial transaction."
He then guided the students to practice another magical pass where
both partners clasped one another's hands.
"You should feel a current of energy
between you," he said. "Perhaps one of you is too loose--overflowing--or
too tense--blocking the flow. See if you can meet the other in the
tensegrity of the middle."
Linda and Raul practiced the move.
"If one is too loose," Carlos Castaneda
continued, "then it's possible to collapse under or hide behind
the belief that 'Handling currency is going to be hard,' or 'I am
not lucky,' or 'It's so easy for him or her or them, but not for me,"
or, 'I don't have to pay attention to money, it always comes to me
somehow…' And that's how one handles energy as well--missing
deadlines, not committing, and letting energy and possibilities slip
through his or her hands."
Raul reddened. Linda was beaming.
"Of course this kind of vagueness is
one way of mis-handling money--or energy," Carlos Castaneda continued,
"Another way is to be overly tight, tense, petty and righteous,
hoarding resources, haggling over amounts, or loaning others a little
dose of judgment along with one's money, believing that "The
way I am is right,' and 'I am better than they are.' And here energetic
possibilities are missed because they don't fit into the seeming perfection
of one's already existing, airtight plan."
Linda's shoulders slumped forward. Raul looked relieved.
"To follow the flow of energy,"
Carlos Castaneda continued, "we need to find a balance within
ourselves and with others: where we are living within our means, where
we are both careful and generous with our resources, aware of what
we earn and spend and save--doing our part and trusting the Spirit
to guide us."
"To be in this state, most of us need to do some homework: We
need to look at 'Who taught us to handle money?' Raul, who taught
you?"
"Nobody did!" Raul blurted out. "I just remember thinking
my father was careless, and my mother was impatient with him, she
wanted him to earn more, and he was happy just running his music store
and paying his bills whenever he made a big sale."
"And what about you, Linda?"
"Well, my father earned a lot but spent most of it on himself.
My mother even had to beg him for grocery money. So I decided I never
wanted to be dependent on anyone else for money; I worked jobs after
school and summer to make my own income."
"Well, you were right to learn about how to handle money, otherwise
we are forever at the mercy of others, tossed on the winds of their
whims. Yet be careful that you don't expect others to be at your mercy.
True, Linda?"
"True. I never thought of it that way… How can I shift
this?"
"Begin at the beginning," Carlos
Castaneda said. "Make a list--take an inventory--look at who
taught you how to handle money, who you imitated, who you consciously
or unconsciously praised as strong, or judged as weak."
Everyone in the studio then continued to practice the magical passes.
After a while, Linda and Raul were able to twirl each other and be
twirled a bit more gracefully; and when they clasped hands, this time
their grip was more balanced.
"This form can give a boost to help you
be conscious of how you've handled your energy; it can give you a
taste of the joy and elegance of the warrior-traveler," Carlos
Castaneda said, "a being who is neither careless, nor driven
by fear--who is linked to the boundless, who says thank you to the
Spirit, and follows its flow in the smallest interactions."
"¿Qué te cuesta, Raul? ¿Qué
te cuesta, Linda?" he whispered. "What does it cost
you to make a total review, a real accounting of your life, and your
energy?"

In this workshop, we will practice magical passes and recapitulation exercises that promote the fluidity and strength to explore the questions: What have you received in your life? What have you given? What debts do you have? What was the mood of dealing with resources, money, value and worth in your lineage? Did you learn to overvalue, or undervalue your own contributions? And in summary: How do all these contribute to the Tensegrity of your being, the currency of your worth and you being a leader in your life.

Tensegrity is the modern practice of the warrior-traveler’s
path with heart which don Juan Matus taught his four students: Carlos
Castaneda, Florinda Donner-Grau, Taisha Abelar and Carol Tiggs. The
word ‘tensegrity’ was coined by an architect, scientist, engineer, global
thinker and dreamer whom Carlos Castaneda admired: R. Buckminster Fuller.
Fuller described tensegrity as a process of tensional integrity—the
inherent interdependence of structures such as cells, bodies, and solar
systems which are held together by a continuous web of tension (such
as gravity) holding together discontinuous islands of compression (such
as the sun, planets and moons in the solar system).
As a modern practice of shamanism, Tensegrity
means adapting to our own energy, the energy of sun and stars, the air,
water, the land, and of its inhabitants in a way that supports the interdependent
integrity of the community that we are, as individual and collective
beings. The tools that can help us to do this include the ancient energy-enhancing
movements and breaths known as magical passes, as well as tracking and dreaming exercises, all of which we will do in this
workshop.
Tracking exercises are: guided self-examination
exercises practiced individually and with a peer witness, which allow
one to track not only our physical patterns, but also our related mental
and emotional patterns and their consequential behaviors and judgments,
which we inherited from our lineage and cultures.
We can direct the energy and awareness gained
from this review to access what don Juan Matus called freedom of
perception—the freedom to move past any limiting interpretations
of our lineage, upbringing and culture to perceive energy directly,
and to dream true interdependence—new possibilities of working
with others and with the earth–wherever we are, possibilities which
spring from an open heart, from bringing one’s best to the interchange. |
